The Zentrum Hüftchirurgie (Hip Surgery Centre) is run by Raimund Völker MD. Dr. Völker specialises in hip joint endoprosthetics and is one of the most experienced surgeons anywhere in Germany in hip resurfacing. He is one of the few internationally known surgeons who perform femoral head partial replacements. In this procedure a titanium stem is used in the neck of the femur for anchoring. This stem is thus the shortest and highest short stem that there currently is. In contrast to standard endoprostheses and other short stems, this form of joint replacement is performed in a way that preserves bone and joint and is thus more conservative. This ensures faster recuperation, natural movement and a more reliable joint. The materials themselves have been tried and tested for over 30 years.

If, due to old age, reduced activity or serious concomitant ailments, a bone-conserving surgical procedure is not possible, high-quality large head implants combined with proven standard stems are used. These are more reliable, last longer and provide better movement than standard implants.

Study

After gaining his final school certificate, Dr. Völker studied at Berlin Free University. During this time he spent periods abroad at the Prague Surgical Clinic in the Czech Republic and Mount Sinai School in New York, USA.

Clinical career

  • 1991: After working in orthopaedics under Prof. U. Weber at the Oskar-Helene Home, Dr. Völker began his further surgical training under Prof. H.-D. Clevert at the DRK Clinics in Berlin, Charité Berlin’s university hospital. This extensive training covered abdominal, vascular, pulmonary and trauma surgery and sports medicine.
  • 1998: Dr. Völker qualified as a surgical consultant. His doctorate work at the Charité Berlin looked at the changes in biliary tract surgery.
  • Later he also gained additional sports medicine qualifications.
  • Since 2003: Increased collaboration with Prof. M Faensen, Head of the Hip Resurfacing Centre at the DRK Clinics in Berlin. Trauma surgery increasingly became the main focus of his surgical work until Dr. Völker subsequently devoted himself exclusively to modern hip surgery.
  • 2008: Dr. Völker became the first surgeon in Bavaria to use a new, pioneering hip replacement procedure, in which only a part of the arthritic femoral head is replaced.
  • Since 2009: Head of the Hip Surgery Centre in the ATOS Private Clinic, Munich.
